gaining　　　from　　　the　　　taciturn　　　old　　　man　　　some　　　comment　　　that　　　might　　　satisfy　　　his　

innocent　vanity　as　father　and　husband；　and　perhaps　dissipate　some　doubts　

that　were　haunting　him。
